Alaskan Malamutes are not well suited for obedience. Due
to their independent nature this breed can be very
challenging when it comes to obeying and following commands.
When taken off the leash you cannot depend on them coming
when you call them unlike most breeds. This breed likes to
invent new ways of doing the basic commands. One of my
malamutes enjoyed “whoooooing” in the ring and the crowd
would laugh and that only encouraged more antics and less
time listening to me.
Many malamutes have received obedience titles from the
basic Companion Dog (C.D.), Companion Dog Excellent (C.D.X.)
to the Utility Dog Degree (U.D.). These are various levels
of obedience beginning with the basic obedience to the
highly skilled scent discrimination, directive retrieve and
jumping on command in the Utility ring.
