Twitter mid flight over the Utility Bar jump (Ch. Onak's Twitterpated Fool, CD, CDX, UD)

Alaskan Malamutes are not well suited for obedience.  Due to their independent nature this breed can be very challenging when it comes to obeying and following commands. When taken off the leash you cannot depend on them coming when you call them unlike most breeds.  This breed likes to invent new ways of doing the basic commands.  One of my malamutes enjoyed “whoooooing” in the ring and the crowd would laugh and that only encouraged more antics and less time listening to me.

Many malamutes have received obedience titles from the basic Companion Dog (C.D.), Companion Dog Excellent (C.D.X.) to the Utility Dog Degree (U.D.).  These are various levels of obedience beginning with the basic obedience to the highly skilled scent discrimination, directive retrieve and jumping on command in the Utility ring.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) offers many performance titles:
  • Agility

  • Obedience
Companion Dog, Companion Dog Excellent, Utility Dog

  • Rally
Rally Novice, Rally Advanced, Rally Excellent
